He went into exile in New York with his English mother, and at the very earliest opportunity joined the Free French Forces as a paratrooper. He was dropped in the Rhone Valley not long after D-Day and distinguished himself in the operations that led to De Gaulle's victorious entry into Paris in 1944. He later served in Indo-China and Korea.
